Gamma Psi Sigma Alumnae Chapter Her-story
In 1967, seven Sigma educators met and decided to form a chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in the Bay City, Flint, and Saginaw areas. After fulfilling the requirements for organizing a chapter, then Central Region Syntaktes Anne Lawrence, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., was invited to come and perform the ceremony that officially organized and chartered the Gamma Psi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
The charter members were: Flora Brumfield, Henrietta Johnson, Virginia Jones, Therese Leeke, Oena McCray, Alfredetta Vaughn, and Idella White.
For over 50 years, the members of Gamma Psi Sigma have worked untiringly, carrying out the mission of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. “to enhance the quality of life within the community,” in public service, leadership development and the education of youth through programs and activities.
In 1968, the chapter organized a Rhoer Club for young girls. In that same year, Gamma Psi Sigma Chapter organized the Philo Club. This club consisted of a group of active women within the community who were interested in working with us in fundraising and service activities. In 1977, the Eta Pi undergraduate chapter was chartered at Saginaw Valley State College - now Saginaw Valley State University.

Our major fundraising event is Miss Rhomania, first held in 1970. Scholarships from this program have helped many students in the Bay City and Saginaw area attend institutions of higher learning. Other projects we are involved in helping with are mentoring, Little Sisters (Project Resassurance), March of Dimes, Good Neighbor’s Mission, Stark’s Nest for unwed mothers, Rescue Mission, and Emmaus House.
Past Basilei of Gamma Psi Sigma are: Sorors Oena McCray, Alfredetta Vaughn, Idella White, Arie Moten, Mary Morris, Marva Gordon, Leodia Powell, Patricia A. Williams, Sue McDole, Dr. Fenobia Dallas, and Alexis Ervin.
Gamma Psi Sigma has grown from seven charter members to over seventy members, and have nurtured many young ladies in the Saginaw and Bay City area. May we continue to let our beacon light shine!
